The setting is the Old West: Mother Lode, New Mexico. A handful of people — drovers, saloon girls, barkeep, preacher and sheriff — wait in a saloon on a stormy Hallowe’en night. They wait for the dawn, when they will go their separate ways, and Mother Lode will truly become a ghost town.
But the storm brings the unexpected arrival of a girl who might or might not be from Boston, a gun fighter who might or might not be dead, and a gambler who might or might not be the Devil.

It’s just a Western theme park, a slightly seedy collection of weathered buildings and aged teepees. Every day the buses come, every day the tourists take their pictures, every day the streets echo with staged gunfights and faked bank robberies. And every day a group of old men stage a dance out of history.
And out of time.
Steven Silk has a bit of a dilemma on his hands. He’s a junior diplomat with the Solar League and he’s got a new job. He’s being sent to Capella IV, or as it’s colloquially known, “New Texas,” as the new ambassador, what with the previous ambassador having been assassinated, and he’s got quite the to-do list. First, find out who assassinated poor Cyrus Cumshaw, second, express to the local government that the Solar League finds the situation totally unacceptable, and third, convince the New Texans that they need a treaty with the Solar League. Oh, and there’s also a little matter of a potential invasion by the alien Z’Srauff. Can Silk unravel the mystery of Cyrus Cumshaw’s assassination? Can he stave off the Z’Srauff? Can he, in fact, find his way around New Texas at all, even with the help of the lovely Gail Pepperdine?
An unsettling customer approaches a rare-and-collectible book shop to inquire after the availability of the Necronomicon. Yes, the Necronomicon. The fact that the book is a fictional construct does not dissuade “Mr. Smith”, so Danielle initiates a search through her network of collectors, dealers and sources. When one of those dealers actually locates a copy, Danielle’s reality begins to chip around the edges — leading to a confrontation that threatens to shatter it completely.
